A Beginner’s Guide to Caring for Wool and Cashmere

Wool and cashmere can feel soft, warm, and comfortable, but good care starts with reading the label. Blends, dyes, construction, and finishes differ, so the care instructions for one sweater may not apply to another. These basics can help you protect knitwear between wears and decide when professional care is the safer option.

Read the care label first

Check the garment’s specific instructions before washing or steaming. If the label says dry clean only, or you are unsure how the item will react, consult a professional cleaner. Do not assume that every wool or cashmere piece can be washed the same way. Keep the label information or product page for reference.

Air it out between wears

After wearing, let knitwear air out before putting it away. A short airing can help refresh a garment without unnecessary washing. Keep it away from direct heat and strong sunlight, which may affect fibers or color. If there is a small spill, follow the care label and act gently rather than rubbing aggressively.

Remove pills with care

Some pilling is normal where fabric rubs against itself or a bag strap. Lay the garment flat and use a fabric comb or depiller designed for knitwear, following the tool instructions. Work slowly on a small area first. Pulling pills by hand can stretch or damage the yarn.

Wash gently only when the label allows

If hand washing is permitted, use cool water and a detergent intended for delicate wool garments. Avoid twisting or wringing the knit. Support the garment when lifting it, press out excess water gently with a clean towel, then reshape it and dry it flat away from direct heat. A hanging wet sweater can stretch under its own weight.

Store knits folded

Fold sweaters rather than hanging them for long periods, since hangers can distort the shoulders. Store clean, completely dry knitwear in a cool, dry place. For seasonal storage, use a breathable container and keep the garment protected from dust and pests. Avoid compressing delicate pieces too tightly.

A simple care checklist

• Follow the care label for the exact garment.

• Air out between wears and avoid unnecessary washing.

• Treat pills gently with a suitable tool.

• Dry flat when washing instructions allow.

• Fold for storage and keep the garment fully dry.

Care needs vary by yarn, blend, and construction. When in doubt, choose the garment label or professional advice over a general rule. Gentle handling and thoughtful storage can help your knitwear keep its shape and feel season after season.
